STOP 0x000000FE error

I have just run into the issue described in Microsoft KB974410. I have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 and when the computer enters or resumes from hibernation, it crashes. The Stop error message that comes up is this one:

STOP 0x000000FE

As far as I have understood, a Microsoft hotfix should be available for this problem. I haven't asked it yet. Instead, to solve my problem, I've just disabled the Selective Suspend feature in the USB composite class drive (Usbccgp.sys). This can be done this way:

  • Click Start
  • Run REGEDIT (on Windows 2008 R2 this ca ne done only using the local administrator account, otherwise you will get an error such as 'windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.')

  • Find the UsbccgpCapabilities registry entry under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\hwid\istanceid\Device Parameters
  • Set the value of the UsbccgpCapabilities registry entry to 10
  • Click OK.
  • Restart the server.

I hope this will help you if you were stuck in the same problem.
